TOO FAT TO SKATE MAGAZINE
Here at TBC, we love our creatives getting active in our community. This month, we expose one of our very talented volunteers, Matt Lynch and his self project TOO FAT TO SKATE Zine.
I'm Matt and I'm from the local zine Too Fat To Skate being written out of suburban Brisbane.
The first incarnation of TFTS was in late 2013. I was a little too excited and it was mostly in shambles. Plus due to me not really having much of an idea of what I was doing, it fell through and had to be shelved for a little while.
A year faded and I enlisted the help of my good friend Harrison, and it's been all forward from there on in. We released our first issue in October 2015 featuring a slew of legends including Clowns, Oslow, and Warm Thoughts (aka Dad Punchers) from the US of A.
Besides being an excuse to talk to and work with some of our favourite local and international bands and artists, TFTS was birthed from the D.I.Y ethos that is omni-present within the punk and hardcore community. That ethos is something that I hold very dear. I've been listening to punk rock ever since I can remember head banging along to "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" (Cheers Mon). This ideal has always been a huge motivator; this notion that if you want something done, you can actually go out and do it. After reading a few choice zines (Last of Our Kind, and Bizoo) and meeting their creators, I couldn't wait to make my own. It's a way of giving something back to a group that's given me so much so far.
I'm simultaneously stoked and humbled that people are enjoying what we do. If I can turn a kid onto a new band or something like that, that really makes it all worth it.
